“When I first started working in fertility more than 15 years ago, I quickly realised how impersonal and overwhelming donor matching could feel. Families were often reduced to profiles and numbers. And many — especially those from diverse backgrounds — didn’t feel truly seen or understood. I made it my mission to change that. Early in my career, working in sperm donation, I didn’t just get to know donors — I built a community. I became known for hosting “donor parties,” where men who had donated could meet others who had shared the same journey. We’d fill pubs on Harley Street — me with nothing but a business card and hundreds of men gathered together. Outsiders must have wondered what on earth was going on. Of course, due to anonymity rules, we could never explain. But that didn’t matter. What mattered was that these men felt supported, appreciated, and never alone.
I brought that same spirit into egg donation — organising park picnics and intimate gatherings where donors could connect and where I could really get to know them. That personal connection became essential. When recipients asked what a donor was really like — their personality, values, emotional intelligence — I could speak with honesty and heart, far beyond what a profile alone could offer. For me, donor matching was never just about hair colour or height. It’s about finding donors who truly fit, in ways that matter for families now and for children in the future. And when children grow up and ask their mums or dads what their donor was like, I don’t want those parents to be filled with dread, holding only abstract cryogenic numbers and a basic profile. They should be able to share something more real, more human.
